George Rapsomanikis and Mamadou Goita
29 April 10.30-12.30
Conflicting narratives confront each other in this period of geo-politically turbulent
globalization and renewed discovery of the virtues of food sovereignty. Does
ensuring the food security and the right to food of the world’s population depend on
keeping global markets open and supply chains flowing? Or do the latest layers of
crisis legitimate the voices of those who call for territorially embedded and protected
markets? George Rapsomanikas is Senior Economist of FAO’s Markets and
Trade Division and editor of the FAO flagship publication The State of Agricultural
Commodity Markets. Mamadou Goita is a development Socio-Economist and
Executive Director of the Institute for Research and Promotion of Alternatives in
Development (IRPAD), which works closely with small-scale farmers’ organizations
in Africa and other continents. He is a member of the IPES-Food expert panel.
